Critical Issues in Leadership (July 2 – September 30, 2012)

Course Description and Rationale

This course is designed to focus student thinking on critical issues facing leaders today. There are two different groups of students in this class. BAHRM and BACULAR’s. This is the first time I’ve taught them jointly. I use different books for each group. So, in each unit you will see discussion forums for each group. I will identify in the title of the discussion forums which ones you have to answer and which are specific to each group. Leaders must make crucial decisions regarding employees, the business, and the surrounding community. This course gives students the opportunity to think deeply and constructively about whom they are currently as leaders and who they intend to be. Class discussions center on what leadership is, exploring leadership theory and lessons, organizational development, ethical decision making change processes, and preventing burnout. Leaders must learn to adapt to, adjust and overcome situations at work and within themselves to develop into the best leaders the can be. Understanding leadership is about understanding human behavior and how to motivate people to work effectively towards a common goal.
